Most of the Republican legislative candidates endorsed by The Seattle Times are losing

Due to hav­ing most­ly endorsed Democ­rats and pro­gres­sive posi­tions on bal­lot mea­sures this year, the Times’ over­all win-loss col­umn looks real­ly good. But the board was clear­ly hop­ing that vot­ers across sub­ur­ban and exur­ban Cen­tral Puget Sound would make the area’s leg­isla­tive rep­re­sen­ta­tion more Repub­li­can than it has been since 2017–2018. That sim­ply isn’t happening.

26th District hopefuls Adison Richards and Spencer Hutchins square off in Gig Harbor

Swing dis­tricts are where the “rub­ber meets the road” in pol­i­tics — where statewide majori­ties are made or lost. While Washington’s 26th Leg­isla­tive Dis­trict has not elect­ed a Demo­c­ra­t­ic can­di­date to the State House since 2012, Adi­son Richards’ per­for­mance in the Top Two sug­gests that could change this year.

Republicans’ dreams of flipping Washington State Legislature vanish in a puff of vapor

By embrac­ing extrem­ism, cor­rup­tion, and vin­dic­tive­ness at every turn for years, Repub­li­cans have destroyed their brand — espe­cial­ly in the sub­urbs — and paved the way for Wash­ing­ton’s trans­for­ma­tion into a state that is even more reli­ably Demo­c­ra­t­ic, no mat­ter what the polit­i­cal cli­mate else­where might be.
