In response to a request for state aid from Ferry County and the Colville Tribes, Governor Chris Gregoire has declared a state of emergency for sixteen of Washington’s thirty nine counties, most on the eastern side of the Cascades. Ferry County is one of the state’s most sparsely populated counties; it usually votes Republican in large margins and has historically been supportive of right wing ballot measures.
