Frito-Lay bags environmental stewardship

Due to the complaints of some consumers over the noise that occurs when opening a bag of Frito-Lay SunChips, the company has announced that, for all but one variety of the chips, it will abandon biodegradable bags for the original plastic-based bag.

Spokeswoman Aurora Gonzalez says the company received complaints about the noise from the bags since they were launched in April 2009.

The bags are louder than traditional bags because the material used for them is made from plants and has a different molecular structure.

This has to be one of the most ridiculous corporate decisions made since Coca-Cola gave consumers New Coke. Defiling the environment appears to be more important to Frito-Lay than a temporary moment of auditory displeasure for consumers. You have to wonder if the cost of a biodegradable bag versus a plastic one really the issue here.

Here’s a tip for consumers: If you don’t like the sound a bag of chips makes when you open it, then don’t buy it. As for Frito-Lay, this is another failure of corporate citizenship.
