Bernie Sanders, Donald Trump projected to win in New Hampshire after polls close

Now that most of the state’s polls have closed, America’s cable and broadcast networks are projecting that Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump — who each finished second place in the Iowa caucuses last week — have won the Democratic and Republican 2016 presidential primaries in New Hampshire.

Early unofficial results show both Sanders and Trump ahead.

On the Democratic side, this is where things stand as of 5:10 PM:

Bernie Sanders55.9%13
Hillary Clinton42.1% 13

It looks like Bernie Sanders is going to have a great night. He’s comfortably ahead of Clinton at the moment, and it’s not close. The Clintons have historically done well in New Hampshire… Bill Clinton placed second in a competitive, crowded field in 1992, after having been far behind in Iowa, and Hillary won the 2008 New Hampshire primary, prevailing over Barack Obama.

But this time, New Hampshire goes to Sanders. He will be able to claim a major, convincing victory as the presidential race moves to Nevada and South Carolina, and his campaign should see a fundraising boost as well, ensuring that the campaign will have the resources to compete in the many states that are holding contests on Tuesday, March 1st (Super Tuesday) and beyond.

Exit polling indicates some 85% of millennial voters voted for Sanders. That is simply remarkable. Sanders also found support from gun owners and independents. Sanders is also winning among women with all age groups overall.

On the Republican side, this is where things stand as of 5:10 PM:

Donald Trump34.4%
John Kasich16.1%
Jeb Bush11.6%
Ted Cruz11.2%
Marco Rubio10.0%
Chris Christie7.9%
Carly Fiorina4.5%
Ben Carson2.1%

Marco Rubio is clearly not having a good night. His terrible debate performance on Saturdayy night could well have hurt him. Rubio came in third in Iowa, but in New Hampshire, he’s slipped back to fifth place, behind John Kasich and Jeb Bush as well as Trump and Cruz. Chris Christie, Carly Fiorina, and Ben Carson are all in the single digits, with Carson polling the lowest of all. Don’t be surprised if Christie announces tonight or tomorrow that he is suspending his campaign.
