Filing Week 2011: A look at who’s filed in key races as of Monday afternoon

June and the 2011 filing period for elected office are upon us. All this week, elections officials around the state will be accepting formal declarations of candidacy from Washingtonians who have decided they want to run for office.

Throughout the week, we’ll be keeping watch on who has filed in key races in King County and elsewhere. This post is the first in a series of Filing Week reports we’ll be bringing you at regular intervals until the close of filing on Friday at 4:30 PM.

Countywide

There will be two county-level contests this year that all of King County will weigh in on. The incumbents for both positions filed this morning: Sherril Huff for Director of Elections, and Lloyd Hara for Assessor.

County Council

Only incumbent Jane Hague (District 6) has filed so far.

Port of Seattle

Dan Caldwell of Des Moines has filed to run against Republican Bill Bryant, the incumbent. Dan is active in the Democratic Party and has previously served as a commissioner for the Highline Water District. He has a masters degree in business, is a U.S. Army veteran, and worked for Boeing in management. He is unquestionably a credible candidate, but will have to work hard to defeat Bryant.

No candidates have filed for Position 2.

Cities

In Bellevue, Jennifer Robertson has filed for reelection to Position 7.

In Federal Way, Jim Ferrell, Susan Honda, and Keith Tyler have filed for Positions 1, 3, and 7, respectively.

In Kirkland, Toby Nixon has filed to run against Jessica Greenway for Position 4. Dave Asher has filed for reelection to Position 6.

In Redmond, Hank Margeson and David Carson have filed for reelection to their city council seats (Positions 3 and 7).

In Seattle, Maurice Classen and Jean Godden have filed for Position 1.

In Tukwila, Kathy Hougardy and Mackenzie Weitzeil have filed for Position 2.

School Board

It’s unclear at this point how many contested races there are going to be. Mark Weber has filed to challenge Sherry Carr (who has not filed) and it’s likely that Harium-Martin Morris, Steve Sundquist, and Peter Maier (who have all filed) will also each have at least one challenger, owing to the disastrous state that Seattle Public Schools are in. Most school board positions have no candidates at this time.
