WA Filing Week 2024: A look at who’s filed in key races as of Tuesday evening

Welcome to our continuing coverage of Filing Week 2024!

Until this Friday, the Secretary of State and county elections officials will be accepting formal declarations of candidacy from Washingtonians who have decided they want to run for office at federal, state, and local levels.

This is a presidential year, which means we’ll have a huge number of statewide races, including for U.S. Senate, State Supreme Court, Governor, and eight other positions in our executive department. We’ll also be electing all ten of our U.S. House positions, most of our state legislative positions, and most county positions plus public utility district commission seats in those counties that have PUDs.

This post is the second in a series of Filing Week reports we’ll be bringing you at regular intervals until the close of filing at 5 PM on the final day of the workweek.

Key statistics from today

  • 76 candidates had filed on the second day of filing as of this post’s last update

  • 37 candidates have filed for federal office
  • 39 candidates have filed for statewide office
  • 188 candidates have filed for legislative positions
  • 429 candidates have filed for local and judicial positions

Notable filings

  • Imraan Siddiqi, the Executive Director of CAIR Washington (and “a prominent voice for justice in the American Muslim community,” according his biography) has filed to run for Congress as a Democrat against Democratic U.S. Representative Kim Schrier (who is Jewish). Siddiqi listed a campaign domain which points to a Squarespace Account Expired page, but does have an active ActBlue fundraising page which supporters are promoting on Twitter.
  • Dave Reichert, the Republican frontrunner for Governor of Washington State according to our polling, filed his paperwork to run today.
  • Raul Garcia, Senator Cantwell’s likely Republican general election opponent, also filed today. Garcia has the endorsement of both the Mainstream Republicans of Washington and the Washington State Republican Party — one of the few statewide races where both are aligned. Garcia ran for governor in 2020 but came up short.
  • Dan Matthews filed as a Republican for Lieutenant Governor.
  • State Senator Patty Kuderer, the Democratic frontrunner for Insurance Commissioner and a sponsor of NPI’s research, filed today.
