Schumer, Gillibrand urge NY Senate to pass marriage equality bill

New York’s two United States Senators (Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand) today released an open letter they sent to the New York State Senate urging members to vote yes on S. 4401, the Marriage Equality Act.

S. 4401 passed the New York Assembly on Tuesday by a vote of eighty nine to fifty two. The State Senate now has eighteen days to pass the bill before its current session ends. If the Senate manages to pass the bill, it would go to Governor David Paterson for his signature. (The governor supports the bill). New York would then become the sixth state to enact full marriage equality for its citizens.

Kudos to Senators Schumer and Gillibrand for coming out in support of equal rights for all couples. Now it’s time for the sixty two New Yorkers who represent the Empire State in its upper legislative chamber to do their part and pass this bill.
