Super Tuesday 2020: Joe Biden prevails in North Carolina with over 40% of vote

Four­teen states and one ter­ri­to­ry held del­e­gate allo­ca­tion events (most­ly pri­maries) today for the Demo­c­ra­t­ic Par­ty’s 2020 pres­i­den­tial nomination.

Rough­ly a third of del­e­gates were up for grabs — more than 1,300 of them — with many of the ear­ly results show­ing for­mer Vice Pres­i­dent Joe Biden and U.S. Sen­a­tor Bernie Sanders gain­ing the most delegates.

Joe Biden won North Carolina’s Demo­c­ra­t­ic pres­i­den­tial pri­ma­ry, a not­ed swing state in the 2020 Pres­i­den­tial Elec­tion. The for­mer Vice Pres­i­dent leads with near­ly 45% of the vote, while Sen. Bernie Sanders has around 25%.

Biden held a com­mu­ni­ty event in Raleigh, North Car­oli­na on Sat­ur­day lead­ing up to Super Tues­day and before he offi­cial­ly won the South Car­oli­na contest.

The only suc­cess­ful Demo­c­ra­t­ic tick­et to win North Car­oli­na in recent years bore the names of Barack Oba­ma and Joe Biden; the duo won the state in 2008.

It seems Biden owes his win in North Car­oli­na, as well as oth­er states, to his deep and abid­ing bond with the black com­mu­ni­ty. Exit polls “sug­gest­ed Biden was bol­stered by heavy sup­port from African Amer­i­can voters.”

Biden’s cam­paign spent near­ly $300,000 in North Car­oli­na lead­ing up to today. Michael Bloomberg, for­mer New York City May­or and a can­di­date who entered the race late in the game, has spent almost $13 mil­lion.

Mean­while, Don­ald Trump held a ral­ly last night, pri­or to Super Tues­day, in North Car­oli­na. Trump is, of course, on the bal­lot in all of the states hold­ing pri­maries. Often, his name is the only name on the ballot.

A can­di­date must win 1,991 del­e­gates to secure the Demo­c­ra­t­ic pres­i­den­tial nom­i­na­tion. If Biden keeps per­form­ing as well as he is tonight, he may be able to become the pre­sump­tive nom­i­nee long before the 2020 DNC in Milwaukee.
