Elec­tions have consequences.

If you’ve been in pol­i­tics for any length of time, then you’ve prob­a­bly heard this say­ing. And it’s true: elec­tions do have con­se­quences. Con­se­quences that direct­ly affect our well being and our qual­i­ty of life.

To find out what the results this year’s elec­tion could mean for the future of trans­porta­tion in Wash­ing­ton State, the team at the North­west Pro­gres­sive Insti­tute cor­dial­ly invites sup­port­ers and read­ers of the Cas­ca­dia Advo­cate to our first-ever Post­elec­tion Brunch on Sun­day, Novem­ber 17th in Kent.

At this event, NPI’s lead­er­ship team will talk about the work we did to defeat Tim Eyman’s very destruc­tive I‑976 dur­ing 2018 and 2019 and facil­i­tate a pan­el dis­cus­sion with leg­isla­tive lead­ers that will react to the elec­tion results and look at next steps for expand­ing free­dom of mobil­i­ty in Wash­ing­ton State.

Regard­less of what hap­pens with I‑976, our state faces seri­ous chal­lenges with respect to trans­porta­tion, chiefly relat­ed to our infra­struc­ture deficit.

For exam­ple:

• The bridge that car­ries I‑5 across the Colum­bia Riv­er is extreme­ly old and does­n’t sup­port modes oth­er than auto travel.
• The tres­tle that allows traf­fic to move between the west­ern and east­ern parts of Sno­homish Coun­ty over U.S. 2 is sim­i­lar­ly in need of replacement.
• Our fer­ry sys­tem has no spare boats, which puts a lot of stress on fer­ry depen­dent com­mu­ni­ties when a fer­ry goes out of ser­vice for maintenance.

To dis­sect these prob­lems and react to the I‑976 results, we’ve assem­bled a stel­lar pan­el of leg­isla­tive lead­ers who spe­cial­ize in trans­porta­tion policy.

Our pan­elists will include:

• State Rep­re­sen­ta­tive Jake Fey, the Chair of the House Trans­porta­tion Com­mit­tee, who rep­re­sents the 29th District;
• State Sen­a­tor Rebec­ca Sal­dana, the Vice Chair of the Sen­ate Trans­porta­tion Com­mit­tee, who rep­re­sents the 37th District;
• State Rep­re­sen­ta­tive Mike Pel­lic­ciot­ti, a can­di­date for State Trea­sur­er who rep­re­sents the 30th District;
• State Sen­a­tor Marko Liias, the Sen­ate Major­i­ty Floor Leader and a mem­ber of the Sen­ate Trans­porta­tion Com­mit­tee who rep­re­sents the 21st District;
• State Rep­re­sen­ta­tive Van­dana Slat­ter, the Vice Chair of the House Trans­porta­tion Com­mit­tee, who rep­re­sents the 48th District.

Brunch will begin at 10 AM; our pro­gram will begin at 10:30 AM, and our pan­el dis­cus­sion will run from 11 AM until noon. Tick­ets start at fifty dol­lars and can be pur­chased at half off the reg­u­lar price by dues pay­ing NPI members.

Pro­ceeds will ben­e­fit NPI’s essen­tial research and imag­i­na­tive advocacy.

Our friends at IBEW Local 46, who have been sup­port­ing our work for years, have kind­ly agreed to host this event for us at their hall in Kent. There’s ample park­ing onsite and the hall is close to major high­ways, includ­ing I‑5 and SR 167.
