Filing Week 2011: A look at who’s filed in key races as of Thursday afternoon

June and the 2011 fil­ing peri­od for elect­ed office are upon us. All this week, elec­tions offi­cials around the state will be accept­ing for­mal dec­la­ra­tions of can­di­da­cy from Wash­ing­to­ni­ans who have decid­ed they want to run for office.

Through­out the week, we’ll be keep­ing watch on who has filed in key races in King Coun­ty and else­where. This post is the fourth in a series of Fil­ing Week reports we’ll be bring­ing you at reg­u­lar inter­vals until the close of fil­ing on Fri­day at 4:30 PM.

Coun­ty­wide

Peren­ni­al can­di­date Mark Greene has filed to run against Sher­ril Huff for Direc­tor of Elec­tions. His fil­ing is pro­vi­sion­al, pend­ing val­i­da­tion of signatures.

Coun­ty Council

Pat­sy Bon­in­con­tri has filed to run against Jane Hague in the 6th Coun­ty Coun­cil Dis­trict, join­ing John Creighton and Richard Mitchell. Mean­while, gad­fly Good­spaceguy has filed to run against Joe McDer­mott in the 8th.

Port of Seattle

The 37th Dis­trict Democ­rats’ male del­e­gate to the King Coun­ty Democ­rats has inex­plic­a­bly filed to run against Gael Tar­leton for Posi­tion 2. (Full dis­clo­sure: Gael serves on NPI’s Board of Direc­tors). Mean­while, Dan Cald­well has with­drawn his can­di­da­cy for Posi­tion 5, leav­ing Bill Bryant unchal­lenged for now.

Cities

The Fed­er­al Way City Coun­cil Posi­tion #3 con­test con­tin­ues to heat up. Four peo­ple are now run­ning — Mark Kop­pang  and Scott M. Spar­ling filed today.

In Kirk­land, Chuck Hin­son has filed against Bob Ster­noff for Posi­tion #2. Ster­noff already has a chal­lenger (Jason Gar­diner), so this race will appear on the win­now­ing elec­tion bal­lot in August.

In Seat­tle, Michael Tay­lor-Judd and Bob­by Forch have joined the race for Jean God­den’s coun­cil seat. Bruce Har­rell is the only oth­er coun­cilmem­ber with a chal­lenger (Brad Meacham).

School Board

Every incum­bent Seat­tle School Board mem­ber now has at least two chal­lengers, which is great to see. It means that all school board mem­bers will appear on the August 16th bal­lot, and Seat­tle vot­ers could choose to elim­i­nate every sin­gle one of the incum­bents from con­sid­er­a­tion at that time if they wished. Sharon Peaslee is Peter Maier’s newest chal­lenger, while Michelle Bue­tow and David Blom­strom have filed to run against Har­i­um Mar­tin-Mor­ris. Joy Ander­son and Chari­ta Dumas are Steve Sundquist’s lat­est challengers.
