June and the 2011 filing period for elected office are upon us. All this week, elections officials around the state will be accepting formal declarations of candidacy from Washingtonians who have decided they want to run for office.
Throughout the week, we’ll be keeping watch on who has filed in key races in King County and elsewhere. This post is the fourth in a series of Filing Week reports we’ll be bringing you at regular intervals until the close of filing on Friday at 4:30 PM.
Countywide
Perennial candidate Mark Greene has filed to run against Sherril Huff for Director of Elections. His filing is provisional, pending validation of signatures.
County Council
Patsy Bonincontri has filed to run against Jane Hague in the 6th County Council District, joining John Creighton and Richard Mitchell. Meanwhile, gadfly Goodspaceguy has filed to run against Joe McDermott in the 8th.
Port of Seattle
The 37th District Democrats’ male delegate to the King County Democrats has inexplicably filed to run against Gael Tarleton for Position 2. (Full disclosure: Gael serves on NPI’s Board of Directors). Meanwhile, Dan Caldwell has withdrawn his candidacy for Position 5, leaving Bill Bryant unchallenged for now.
Cities
The Federal Way City Council Position #3 contest continues to heat up. Four people are now running — Mark Koppang and Scott M. Sparling filed today.
In Kirkland, Chuck Hinson has filed against Bob Sternoff for Position #2. Sternoff already has a challenger (Jason Gardiner), so this race will appear on the winnowing election ballot in August.
In Seattle, Michael Taylor-Judd and Bobby Forch have joined the race for Jean Godden’s council seat. Bruce Harrell is the only other councilmember with a challenger (Brad Meacham).
School Board
Every incumbent Seattle School Board member now has at least two challengers, which is great to see. It means that all school board members will appear on the August 16th ballot, and Seattle voters could choose to eliminate every single one of the incumbents from consideration at that time if they wished. Sharon Peaslee is Peter Maier’s newest challenger, while Michelle Buetow and David Blomstrom have filed to run against Harium Martin-Morris. Joy Anderson and Charita Dumas are Steve Sundquist’s latest challengers.
