Earlier today we posted a link to a story about a five-year old girl who was accidentally shot and killed by another five-year old child who found a gun lying around. It’s a tragic story and we extend our deepest condolences to the families involved. But, it’s also a reminder that irresponsible firearms ownership needlessly results in the deaths of thousands of Americans every year.
Ironically, research shows shows that gun owners are far more likely to be injured or killed by their own guns than they are by somebody else wielding a gun. Owning a gun doesn’t make you safer… it makes you less safe. Especially if you haven’t been trained on how to handle firearms responsibly and correctly.
Own a gun? At the very least, keep it locked up and store the ammunition separately. Or consider getting rid of it altogether. You’ll be safer.
