The Repub­li­can fron­trun­ner is in a vise. He faces the hard right in his own par­ty, and a Demo­c­ra­t­ic-trend­ing state elec­torate which has not put a Repub­li­can in the governor’s man­sion since 1980.

Reichert’s per­son­al web­site has yet to be updat­ed to say he’s run­ning for gov­er­nor, but some sort of for­mal launch is clear­ly immi­nent, and will prob­a­bly occur after the long Fourth of July weekend.

For­mer Unit­ed States Rep­re­sen­ta­tive and King Coun­ty Sher­iff Dave Reichert, a Repub­li­can, appears to be on the verge of join­ing the increas­ing­ly crowd­ed field of can­di­dates run­ning for Gov­er­nor of Wash­ing­ton State next year, if recent state­ments from Repub­li­can state leg­is­la­tors are any indication.

“There is no can­di­date for gov­er­nor at this point focused on the biggest chal­lenges fac­ing our state includ­ing afford­able hous­ing, reduc­ing home­less­ness, cre­at­ing jobs and mak­ing neigh­bor­hoods safe,” Mul­let contends. 

“My office has been on the front lines of our chang­ing world,” said Franz. “I know what it means to take bold risks to make big progress because there isn’t time to wait. We’re fac­ing many chal­lenges, but we can tack­le them, together.”

“I have nev­er been afraid to take on big chal­lenges, and I’ve nev­er for­got­ten who I’m fight­ing for,” Fer­gu­son said in a state­ment. “I look for­ward to lis­ten­ing and learn­ing from Wash­ing­to­ni­ans in every coun­ty and cor­ner of this great state.”

“I’ve made my deci­sion,” Con­stan­tine said. “Hav­ing giv­en it thor­ough con­sid­er­a­tion, I have con­clud­ed that the answer is no, I would not run. I’m not will­ing to set aside all that we’re achiev­ing right now — the full-time work that I’m pas­sion­ate about — in favor of full-time fundrais­ing and campaigning.
