The final pan­el I attend­ed at the Cross­cut Fes­ti­val had the provoca­tive title, “The GOP is dead. Long live the GOP!” The dis­cus­sion was of course about the future of the Repub­li­can Par­ty, with a focus on Wash­ing­ton State. 

In the sec­ond after­noon ses­sion of the Cross­cut Fes­ti­val, the may­ors of Seat­tle, Van­cou­ver, B.C., and Port­land came togeth­er to dis­cuss what makes their cities and our region great, as well as the chal­lenges. This pan­el fea­tured pan­elists Ethan Blevins, staff attor­ney at Pacif­ic Legal Foun­da­tion; Ever­green State Col­lege stu­dent Jamil Bee; David Nei­w­ert, inves­ti­gate reporter and author of a recent book on the Rad­i­cal Right; and Ever­green State Col­lege pro­fes­sor of Geog­ra­phy and Native Stud­ies, Zoltán Grossman.

Dur­ing this pan­el dis­cus­sion, Rep. Reuven Car­lyle said that Wash­ing­ton has the most tax breaks because we have the most upside-down and back­wards tax struc­ture in the nation. Regard­ing the nego­ti­a­tions around Boe­ing tax breaks, he acknowl­edged that there were both “sub­stan­tive wins and sub­stan­tive los­es” for the peo­ple of Washington.

The first ses­sion I attend­ed today was “Bridg­ing the Cas­cade Divide” dis­cussing the polit­i­cal dif­fer­ences, but also the com­mon­al­i­ties, between East­ern and West­ern Washington. 

Orga­nized by news out­let Cross­cut, the Fes­ti­val is intend­ed to “bring togeth­er some of the bold­est thought lead­ers in pol­i­tics, busi­ness and social jus­tice activism to be inter­viewed live on stage by some of the finest jour­nal­ists in the Pacif­ic Northwest.”
