United States Senator Patty Murray and United States Representative Kim Schrier announced this afternoon that their reelection campaigns have begun airing new television spots that respond to the Alito court’s horrific and appalling decision overturning Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey.
In the spots, Murray and Schrier speak directly to voters in a single take, emphasizing that they are unequivocally committed to reproductive rights, while noting that their opponents are not. Here’s Murray’s “Won’t Back Down” ad:
Murray: “It is a horrifying reality – extreme politicians across our country, now in charge of the most private healthcare decisions. The Supreme Court may have ruled. But it’s up to us to make sure they don’t get the final word. I won’t stop fighting until we guarantee reproductive freedom for every American. We will not be still. We will not be silent. We will not back down.”
And here’s Schrier’s “Oath” ad:
Schrier: As a doctor, my oath is to protect patients. As your congresswoman, my oath is to protect your rights. Now that the Court has overturned Roe, Congress must protect a woman’s right to choose. We should trust women to make these decisions, especially if a mother’s life is at risk, or in cases of rape or incest. I’m Kim Schrier and I am the only candidate in this race who will protect a woman’s right to choose. I approve this message because I’ll never break my oath to you.
One of Schrier’s Republican opponents, King County Councilmember Reagan Dunn, went up on cable yesterday with this ad that tries to simultaneously pitch his candidacy while serving up criticism of Schrier and President Joe Biden. The ad makes no mention of reproductive rights, a cause Dunn has previously broken with his party on (as his mother did before him), but now opposes.
Murray’s campaign also has a second ad, “Abortion Ban,” that draws a clear contrast between her position and that of Republican Tiffany Smiley’s.
Dr. Judy Kimelman, MD: “Now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade and states across the nation are banning abortion. You think women’s reproductive health care is safe here in Washington? Not with Mitch McConnell’s handpicked candidate Tiffany Smiley in the Senate.”
Audio of Tiffany Smiley plays where Smiley states: “I’m 100% pro-life.”
“Tiffany Smiley’s first vote will be to make Mitch McConnell majority leader and they will work together to ban abortions nationwide. Don’t take my word. Believe Tiffany Smiley.”

NPI’s most recent statewide survey found Murray with an eleven point lead over Smiley. Murray has won five consecutive campaigns for the United States Senate, dating back to 1992, when she was first elected. Schrier, meanwhile, has won two consecutive campaigns in the state’s 8th Congressional District, defeating Republicans Dino Rossi and Jesse Jensen. Jensen is running against Schrier this year along with Dunn and failed attorney general candidate Matt Larkin.
Voters across Washington will get their Top Two election ballots in less than a month, and will cast votes for U.S. Senate and U.S. House, as well as for Secretary of State, state legislative races, and county positions.
