Welcome to Filing Week 2022!
Today through Friday, the Secretary of State and county elections officials will be accepting formal declarations of candidacy from Washingtonians who have decided they want to run for office at federal, state, and local levels.
This is a midterm year, which means we’ll be electing all ten of our U.S. House positions, most of our state legislative positions, and several of our State Supreme Court positions, as well as most county positions.
This post is the first in a series of Filing Week reports we’ll be bringing you at regular intervals until the close of filing at 5 PM on the final day of the workweek.
Incumbent Democratic Senator Patty Murray and her likely general election opponent, Republican Tiffany Smiley, both filed today. Each candidate has raised millions of dollars for the campaign, easily dwarfing everyone else in the race.
Others who have decided to run in this marquee contest and will likely be eliminated in the August Top Two election are Leon Lawson, John Guenther, Charlie (Chuck) Jackson, Bill Hirt, and Ravin Pierre.
Incumbent Democratic Secretary Steve Hobbs and his likely general election opponent, Republican Keith Wagoner, also wasted no time in filing today.
Their competition thus far consists of Pierce County Auditor Julie Anderson (who isn’t aligned with a party) and Republican Bob Hagglund.
The three justices whose terms are expiring all filed to seek reelection: Mary Yu, G. Helen Whitener, and Barbara Madsen. So far, they have no opponents.
Two-thirds of the state’s incumbents filed for reelection on day one: Suzan DelBene, Rick Larsen, Jaime Herrera Beutler, Dan Newhouse, Derek Kilmer, Pramila Jayapal, and Adam Smith. Each one has at least one challenger.
Hundreds of people formally declared their candidacies for State House or State Senate today. A total of fifty-five candidates filed to run in districts that span more than one county on the first day of filing.
Two candidates have filed to run for Prosecuting Attorney, which is an open seat this year due to the retirement of Dan Satterberg: Jim Ferrell and Leesa Manion.
Three hopefuls have filed to succeed Julie Anderson as Auditor: Damon Townsend, Deryl McCarty, and Linda Farmer. Josh Harris also filed, but withdrew. Mary Robnett is unopposed thus far for reelection as Prosecuting Attorney.
