So far, few surprises

Of the fifteen states that the New York Times have called the race in, none is a particular surprise: solidly Red states in the South have gone for Trump, while Northeastern states have been called for Biden. So far, so uncontroversial!

None of the key swing states are even close to declaring a winner right now (although poor results in Miami-Dade County, Florida, are causing the Biden campaign to sweat) – it’s much too early.

The earliest results from Texas show Biden comfortably ahead of Trump. While that is unlikely to last long into the night, it’s a sure sign that things are changing fast in a state that has been a Republican citadel until very recently. Even if Biden doesn’t pull it out in Texas tonight, the state’s Democratic Party deserves all the credit in the world for their years-long effort to drive voter turnout and combat the disenfranchisement of voters of color in their state.
