Why is the technologically most advanced nation on earth so far behind on rail?

— A richly ironic question from State Senator Mary Margaret Haugen at a Discovery Institute event on Wednesday, May 27th (as quoted by the Seattle P-I). Haugen, Chair of the Senate Transportation Committee, has had a hand in many, many transportation budgets with billions of dollars appropriated for highways, but only a meager amount for rail. She has also repeatedly backed legislation to kill Sound Transit. Show us the money, Senator Haugen, and we’ll start getting caught up with the rest of the world on rail.
