Time Warner Cable backs off

Negative publicity has apparently convinced telco giant Time Warner Cable to back off its plans to start introducing bandwidth caps and meters for customers in several selected “test markets”, according to several sources.

Fittingly, the announcement that the company was at least temporarily backing off was not made by Time Warner itself, but by Senator Chuck Schumer, who delivered the news alongside activists who had opposed Time Warner’s move outside of the company’s Rochester headquarters.

The company remains defensive, even though it has tacitly admitted defeat for now – which is typical corporate behavior – so this victory certainly does not negate the need for strong Net Neutrality and consumer protection laws.
