Elections Hub: Washington Decides 2022

Welcome to NPI’s Elections Hub

Democratic dominance continues in Washington State

Election certified with 40.43% turnout
Patty Murray vanquishes large field of opponents, will face Republican Tiffany Smiley in November
U.S. Representative Jaime Herrera Beutler eliminated in WA-03; Republican voters send fascist Joe Kent to general election along with Democratic hopeful Marie Perez
Loren Culp loses again in WA-04 as Dan Newhouse escapes the wrath of the Trump cult
Republicans locked out of Secretary of State contest as Democratic incumbent Steve Hobbs and independent Julie Anderson advance
Democratic legislative candidates – from Emily Randall to John Lovick and Claire Wilson – show once again that organized people can defeat organized money
Republicans not capitalizing on any of their legislative pickup opportunities, Democrats look poised not only to keep their majorities, but possibly even add a seat or two

What’s at stake in this election: The field of candidates for every position that is being contested this year will be narrowed to just two each for the November general election, which is actually a runoff under the “Top Two” system that Washington uses. Races in which no more than two candidates filed will not appear on the ballot unless they are for partisan office. 2022 is a midterm election year, with contests for U.S. Senate, U.S. House, Washington State House, Washington State Senate, Public Utility District, and most county offices in 36 out of 39 counties on the ballot. There is also a special election for Secretary of State.
