BALLOT MEASURES
A Great Election for Progressives
INITIATIVE 912 - Voters were defeating Initiative 912, 53% to 47%, in an unbelievable landmark victory that is also a crushing defeat for the right wing in Washington State.
INITIATIVE 330 - In another huge victory, Initiative 330 was defeated. The initiative would have stripped Washington State citizens of their constitutional rights.
INITIATIVE 901 - By a fairly large margin, voters approved a new extensive smoking ban that phobitis smoking in all indoor public places, another progressive victory.
PROPOSITION 1 (Seattle) - Voters spoke loud and clear in a firm rejection of the Seattle Monorail Project. Some progressives see this as a loss, but we think it's for the best.
PROPOSITION 2 (Seattle) - Voters approved a proposition to make more seats on the Seattle Monorail Board directly elected by voters. The agency, however, is already folding.
PROPOSITION 1 (King County) - The Veterans and Human Services Levy was easily approved by King County voters. It was passing with 57% voting in favor.
Initiative Defeats
INITIATIVE 336 - While 336 failed, a main proponent, Dylan Malone, expressed great optimism for the proposals in 336. Legislators are now paying attention to these issues, he says
INITIATIVE 900 - As expected, voters passed Eyman's performance audits initiative. The Legislature ought to act to curb some of the state auditor's new powers.
ELECTED OFFICES
Major Progressive Candidates Win
SIMS VICTORY - Ron Sims was easily reelected in King County, crushing David Irons by a substantial margin. Irons has conceded the race.
SOMERS TRIUMPHS - Democrat Dave Somers triumphed in Snohomish County, handily beating GOP hack and developers' shill Jeff Sax.
TAKKO WINS - Democrat Dean Takko easily held on to his seat in the state House of Representatives (19th Legislative District) in SW Washington.
INCUMBENTS WIN - All of the progressive incumbents for county council and the City of Seattle were easily reelected. Challenger Dwight Pelz lost for city council.
STUART VICTORIOUS - In Clark County, progressive Steve Stuart won election as County Commissioner despite the GOP's use of smear tactics.
CHANG TRIUMPHS - In Port Orchard, progressive Fred Chang took 60% of the vote against a former mayor to win the City Council seat.
Two Port Commission Candidates Lose
MOLLOY LOSES PORT SEAT - Progressive incumbent Lawrence Molloy lost his seat on the Port Commission to Republican John Creighton.
JOLLEY CAN'T UNSEAT DAVIS - Port reformer Jack Jolley was unable to unseat port insider Pat Davis, who will continue to sell out to business interests
