2005 PRIMARY: SNOHOMISH COUNTY DEMOCRATIC BALLOT
Every year, the Northwest Progressive Institute teams with its Permanent Defense division to produce an endorsements guide for members and supporters. While we encourage you to vote the Democratic ballot in the primary, we recognize that some Permanent Defense supporters are Republicans. We therefore strive to provide them with an endorsements guide for their party.
Among Democratic and nonpartisan candidates, we endorse candidates that we believe best reflect our progressive values. If we endorse Republicans, we look for candidates that are closest to our beliefs, giving the nod to moderates and rejecting extremists, while recognizing that such candidates may not share many of our values, vision, or ideals.
We ask three general questions when evaluating every candidate for endorsement:
- What are the candidate’s qualifications and why is he or she the best candidate?
- What is the candidate’s vision, plan, and agenda for the office they are seeking?
- What other endorsements or support does the candidate have?
Snohomish County Council District #1: MARIAN HARRISON
Our Statement: Marian Harrison is clearly the most impressive and outstanding candidate in this race. A lifelong resident of Snohomish County, Marian has been active within the community for dozens of years. Marian's top priorities are balancing environmental protection with economic development, creating good jobs, and supporting a stronger investment in transportation infrastructure. Marian's experience and vision will serve Snohomish County well.
Other Endorsements: Notable endorsements include Executive Aaron Reardon; Congressman Rick Larsen, the Hon. Phil Talmadge, Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen, Rep. John McCoy, Rep. Mike Sells, the Women’s Political Caucus, the Public School Employees, and several local Democratic organizations.
Our Statement: Dave Gossett is an outstanding veteran of the Snohomish County Council who is unopposed in the primary election. Dave's priorities are similar to Marian Harrison's (who we also endorsed) and include growth management, broader environmental protection, public safety, jobs, and fiscal responsibility. Dave is the only sensible choice for the 4th District.
Other Endorsements: Notable endorsements include U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell, U.S. Representative Jay Inslee, Executive Aaron Reardon, numerous state legislators, the Sierra Club, Snohomish County Democrats, SEIU and many other unions.
Our Statement: It's definitely time to get rid of Republican Jeff Sax and put Dave Somers back on the Snohomish County Council. Somers is a fisheries scientist and knowledgeable land-use analyst who has an outstanding record and can provide the leadership Snohomish County needs. Dave's priorities are protecting family farms, investing in better transportation infrastructure, and delivering better public services.
Other Endorsements: Notable endorsements include U.S. Congressman Rick Larsen , U.S. Congressman Jay Inslee, numerous state legislators, the Snohomish County Democrats, the Washington Conservation Voters, Progressive Majority, the Sierra Club, Democracy for Snohomish County, and numerous unions.
